Cacy and Kiara and the Curse of the Kii
Cacy and Kiara are sixth grade cousins who couldn't be more different from each other. When their two schools take the same field trip to Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, Cacy and Kiara are thrown into an adventure filled with mystery and murder. In order to save the park and themselves from certain destruction, they call upon their family 'aumakua (personal gods), receive guidance from the Goddesses Hi iaka and Pele, and befriend the inhabitants of a secret Menehune village. Throughout their adventure, they learn the power of their connection to ancient Hawai'i and the importance of working together. Available online at Barnes & Noble and Amazon, and locally at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawai'i, Other Realms, Basically Books (Hilo) and Enjoy Comics (Hilo). Aloha Pepe
Aloha Pepe is a blank and white experimental series of cartoon short stories introducing readers to the chihuahua known as Pepe; art mascot, editorial cartoon commentator, and a whimsical little fellow who becomes whatever he wants. Aloha Pepe also speaks out for others, spreading awareness about puppy mills and cruelty. He was inspired by a friend's real life chihuahua who sadly, crossed over the Rainbow Bridge recently. Aloha Pepe continues on in his memory.
The comic book is available at Other Realms, Dragon's Lair, and Enjoy Comics (Hilo).

Jinshan
Jinshan tells about a 16 year old Chinese American immigrant living with her family in the tight knit system of Single Room Occupancy as affordable housing. Imagine an old hotel converted to allow low income families to live in small one room units with shared bathrooms and kitchens. Mindi Min learns about the stories of the early Chinese immigrants and their hardships after coming to California to seek the "Gold Mountain", or Jin Shan, the land of hope and better opportunities. Through current social circumstances and criminal attacks on her loved ones, Mindi rises up to fight back and protect the community as a first time superhero named Jinshan. The story is inspired by my personal travels (including staying at an SRO hotel) and stories from Cameron Houses, Chinese Historical Society of America, The San Fransico Dungeon and the Chinese Culture Center of San Fransicso. Even Aloha Pepe has a part in the story. Aside from addressing real social issues, the topic of dementia and Alzheimer's has a part in the story as well.
